Wilmette, IL – Two Passengers Injured After Metra Train Strikes Semi-Trailer Truck Near Wilmette Station

Wilmette, IL (May 8, 2026) – Two Metra passengers suffered injuries Thursday, May 7, after a Union Pacific-North line train struck a flatbed semi-trailer truck on the tracks near the Wilmette station. The crash happened shortly after 2:30 p.m. as an outbound UP-North train collided with the truck.

Two Passengers Injured After Metra Train Strikes Semi-Trailer Truck Near Wilmette Station

The force of the collision separated the truck’s cab from its trailer. The trailer appeared to be carrying a large pavement grinder at the time of the crash. One passenger described feeling a hard brake, a brief release, and then a sharp jolt as the train hit the truck.

The truck driver had already exited the vehicle before emergency units arrived and was not injured. Two train passengers were taken to a hospital with minor injuries. No additional injuries were reported among those on board.

Emergency units responded to the scene and began assessing the situation. The accident prompted Metra to halt both inbound and outbound UP-North line service, with riders advised to expect extensive delays and seek alternate transportation.

Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances of the collision.

Our thoughts remain with the injured passengers as they recover and receive care.

Legal Options After Being Injured in a Train Accident in Illinois

Passengers injured in a train accident in Illinois have the right to seek compensation for their injuries, and multiple parties may share legal responsibility. Depending on how the crash happened, liability could fall on the train operator, the trucking company, the truck driver, or a combination of all three. Identifying who bears responsibility is one of the first steps an attorney takes when reviewing this type of case.

Illinois law allows injured passengers to file a personal injury claim against any party whose negligence contributed to the accident. Evidence gathered early — including witness statements, surveillance footage, and accident reports — plays a major role in building a strong claim.

Injuries from train collisions can range from minor to severe. Common injuries include whiplash, back and neck trauma, broken bones, and head injuries. Even passengers who initially report minor injuries should seek a full medical evaluation, since some conditions worsen in the days following a crash. Medical records created close to the time of the accident carry significant weight in any legal claim.

Illinois has a two-year statute of limitations for personal injury claims, meaning injured passengers generally have two years from the date of the accident to file a lawsuit. Missing this deadline can eliminate the right to seek compensation entirely. Acting promptly gives an attorney time to gather evidence, review available insurance coverage, and explain what options may apply to a specific situation.

When multiple parties are involved the claims process can become complicated quickly. A personal injury attorney can manage communications with all parties, review contracts and safety records, and clarify what types of compensation a person may be eligible to seek, including medical expenses, lost wages, and other related losses.
