Does Depo-Provera Cause Brain Tumors?

Research suggests that prolonged use of Depo-Provera, a popular hormonal birth control injection, may increase the risk of developing meningiomas. Studies indicate that the synthetic hormone medroxyprogesterone acetate, the active ingredient in Depo-Provera, Depo-SubQ Provera, and generic versions of the “birth control shot” can stimulate the growth of meningiomas, particularly in women who have received multiple injections over an extended period.

A March 2024 study published in the British Medical Journal (BMJ) found that women who used injectable medroxyprogesterone acetate long-term had a 5.6 times higher risk of developing meningioma.

What Are Depo-Provera Brain Tumor Symptoms?

Depo-Provera brain tumors are usually noncancerous, but they can create serious health complications because they form in the protective layers of the spinal cord and brain. As they grow larger, they sometimes put pressure on the spinal cord or brain. Symptoms of meningiomas include:

  • Severe headaches
  • Vision problems
  • Seizures
  • Confusion
  • Memory loss
  • Trouble speaking
  • Hearing loss
  • Weakness of the arms and legs

In many cases, surgical removal of the tumors becomes necessary. Surgery carries additional risks, including damage to the surrounding brain or spinal cord tissues, loss of function, and even death.

If you developed a meningioma after using Depo-Provera, Depo-SubQ Provera, or a generic form of the contraceptive, you may have grounds for a lawsuit against Pfizer, the drug’s manufacturer.

Understanding the Depo-Provera Lawsuit

Lawsuits against Pfizer claim that the pharmaceutical giant failed to adequately warn Depo-Provera users about the risk of developing meningiomas—even though they knew about, or should have known about, the dangers. Some plaintiffs also allege that Pfizer failed to investigate the possible link between meningiomas and the hormones used in Depo-Provera, citing studies conducted as far back as 1989.

In March 2024, Pfizer stated that they were aware of the risks associated with prolonged use of Depo-Provera. They claimed that they would update product labels and patient information leaflets. Nearly a year later, the company has still not included a warning about the possible link between the birth control shot and the development of meningiomas on its U.S. product label.
