12/08/25 (Chicago, IL) – More than 10,000 KTEBO brand children’s toy writing tablets are now under recall after federal authorities confirmed that the button cell battery powering the devices can be easily accessed and swallowed. Ingestion of these batteries can cause severe internal burns, lifelong injury, or death. Although no incidents have been reported so far, the risk is extremely serious. Parents and caregivers should take immediate action to remove these toys from children’s reach.

Children depend on manufacturers to provide safe products. When companies fail to meet that responsibility, families face unacceptable danger. This mistake is significant and demands full accountability.
At Ankin Law, we are committed to protecting children and holding manufacturers responsible for injuries or loss caused by unsafe products, even when a recall is already underway. Families deserve answers, protection, and justice. If a child has been harmed by a defective toy, our firm is here to help.
Why Were the Tablets Recalled?
The KTEBO Children’s Writing Tablet Toy recall was initiated because a design flaw was identified. The screw used to secure the battery compartment can detach, giving children easy access to the toxic batteries. Ingestion of these button cell batteries could lead to serious internal burns, permanent injury, or death.
These recalled toy tablets are unreasonably dangerous to children, and parents and caregivers should take immediate steps to protect their little ones. Young children, especially toddlers, are naturally curious and often explore objects by putting them into their mouths. Button cell batteries are small enough to swallow, and once ingested, they can cause severe internal damage in a short period of time.
What Are the Risks of Ingesting a Button Cell Battery?
Ingesting a button cell battery is a life-threatening medical emergency. Bodily fluids can cause a reaction with the battery, causing it to release a strong, alkaline substance. The reaction can lead to chemical burns and rapid tissue damage within just 15 minutes to 2 hours after ingestion. This can lead to fistulas (holes between the esophagus and trachea), damage to major blood vessels, and even permanent damage that requires multiple surgeries to repair. Additionally, if left untreated, or not treated fast enough, button cell battery ingestion can lead to death.
What Are Symptoms of Button Cell Battery Ingestion?
Symptoms of button cell battery ingestion vary, and some children show no signs at first. Parents and caregivers should watch for:
- Drooling, vomiting, refusing food and drinks
- Chest or abdominal pain
- Coughing, wheezing, or trouble breathing
- Hoarseness
- Bloody vomit, stool, or saliva
If you suspect your child has ingested a button cell battery, take immediate action. Don’t wait for symptoms to appear. Contact poison control or call 911 right away. Do not induce vomiting, as this can cause further damage. Do not give honey or any food or fluids unless instructed by a professional to do so.
What Is KTEBO Doing About the Toy Writing Tablet Recall?
KTEBO is offering a new tablet toy to consumers who purchased these recalled children’s toys. To receive a replacement tablet, consumers are required to send a picture of both recalled tablets in the set, with the words “RECALLED” written on them in permanent marker. Photos should be sent to writing-tablet-recall@ktebo.com with the subject line “Recall Proof” followed by the consumer’s name.
How to Dispose of the Recalled Tablets With Button Cell Batteries
Button cell batteries are classified as hazardous waste. They cannot be thrown into household trash, placed in standard recycling bins, or mixed with regular batteries at drop-off locations. These batteries carry a higher risk of fire and require special handling.
To dispose of tablets with button cell batteries safely, remove the batteries from the compartment and throw the dangerous tablet away. Contact your local hazardous waste facility or municipal waste authority for battery disposal instructions. They can provide guidance for proper disposal in your area and direct you to approved collection sites.
What Damages Can I Seek in a Battery Ingestion Lawsuit?
If a defective tablet allowed your child to access a button cell battery, and your child suffered injuries or death as a result, you may be entitled to pursue compensation through a product liability lawsuit. The damages available in a battery ingestion case can include several categories of recovery.
Economic Damages
These damages, often called special damages, are the tangible losses you incurred as a result of another entity’s negligence. This can include medical bills (Past and future), and lost wages (from taking off work to care for your injured child).
Non-Economic Damages
Non-economic damages, known as general damages, are the intangible losses suffered as a result of another’s negligent behaviors. This can include PTSD, emotional distress, and pain and suffering.
Punitive Damages
While not commonly awarded, punitive damages serve to punish the liable party for actions deemed extremely negligent or intentionally harmful. Awarding punitive damages also helps to discourage similar acts in the future.
If your child died due to battery ingestion, you may be able to claim damages for funeral expenses in a wrongful death claim.
