Amneal Recalls Antibiotic Tablets Due to Microbial Contamination

June 5th, 2025 (Chicago, IL) – Amneal Pharmaceutical LLC has issued a nationwide recall of three batches of Sulfamethoxazole and Trimethoprim tablets. These oral antibiotics are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections. They’re often taken in combination with each other. According to a product quality complaint, they may have black spots on them due to microbial contamination. The recalled antibiotic tablets are thought to be contaminated with the Aspergillus fungus. This contamination can lead to life-threatening reactions, especially for people with immunosuppressive conditions.

What Is the Aspergillus Fungus?

Aspergillus is a common fungus that can grow and thrive in many different environments, including the human body. There are over 200 different species of this fungus, and around 40 of these species can infect humans.

Typically, you would come into contact with this fungus outside, because Aspergillus grows rather well in soil, decaying vegetation, leaf litter, seeds and grains. The great outdoors isn’t the only place you can come into contact with this fungus, however. This fungus can also grow indoors, especially in buildings damaged by water.

Several species of this fungus can survive in highly acidic and mildly basic environments, and at different temperatures. Some species produce mycotoxins, and others produce different allergens.

What Is Aspergillosis?

Aspergillosis is a condition caused by contact with the Aspergillus fungus. Aspergillosis can typically be divided into two categories: allergic reactions and invasive infections. Additionally, there are five main types of this condition.

  • Allergic Aspergillus sinusitis: this condition is caused when Aspergillus causes sinus inflammation. This condition does not develop into an infection
  • Chronic pulmonary aspergillosis: this occurs when the fungus infects your lungs. With this condition, large balls of the fungus can form in your lungs.
  • Allergic bronchopulmonary aspergillosis: this occurs when the fungus enters your lungs and causes mild inflammation. This does not develop into infection.
  • Cutaneous (skin) aspergillosis: This occurs when the fungus enters through damaged skin, such as burns, cuts, and punctures.
  • Invasive aspergillosis: The most serious form of aspergillosis, this condition starts in your lungs and can spread throughout the body. Immune compromised individuals are at higher risk of developing invasive aspergillosis.

Aspergillosis Symptoms

Depending on the type of condition you develop, your symptoms can vary. Some common symptoms of aspergillosis include: wheezing, coughing, shortness of breath, stuffiness and headaches for allergic type reactions. Fever, coughing up blood, bleeding in the lungs, chest pain, and shortness of breath are common for people with invasive aspergillosis.

What Damages Can I Claim in a Product Liability Lawsuit?

In a product liability lawsuit, you can expect to recover economic damages (medical bills, lost wages, lost earning capacity, etc.), non-economic damages (pain and suffering, loss of consortium, loss of enjoyment of life, etc.), and in some rare cases where the liable party’s actions are considered particularly egregious, punitive damages are awarded as well.
