A New Community Justice Center Features a Few ‘Chicagoans You Should Know’

There is a new center in the North Lawndale neighborhood in Chicago that’s going to help young people as they restart their lives.

That’s exactly what the person its named after would have wanted.

The Dr. Dennis Deer Community Justice Center was officially dedicated on April 27th at 1441 S. Keeler Avenue on the west side.

Serving as the main headquarters for the Lawndale Christian Legal Center, the Grand Opening ceremony included speeches by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle and United States Congressman Danny Davis.

It’s a dream come for the late Dr. Deer, who served as the Senior VP of LCLC until his death in 2024. His partner in the project, current President and CEO Cliff Nellis, carried on the decade-long vision to its completion in the spring of 2025.

The building features 20 apartments that will house young men in theirs 20s from the North Lawndale neighborhood who are on probation in the Circuit Court of Cook County. Providing several services, including workforce skills development and mental health treatment, the goal is get these resident’s next chapter of the lives going on the right path.
