Police said an officer spotted a Cadillac CTS driving south on Raynor Avenue without its headlights or taillights around 2 a.m. The 21-year-old driver sped off when the officer attempted a traffic stop near Black Road.
The officer stopped pursuing before reaching Black Road and Midland Avenue due to safety concerns. Witnesses then saw the Cadillac run a red light at Black Road and Larkin Avenue, and then struck a Chevrolet Cruze that was travelling north on a green light.
The crash sent the Cadillac off the road, where it hit a utility pole and overturned in a nearby grassy area. The Cadillac driver, who was alone in the vehicle, had to be extricated and was taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center with life-threatening injuries before being flown to Loyola University Medical Center.
The Chevrolet driver, a 23-year-old Chicago man, and his two passengers suffered injuries described as non-life-threatening. All three were also taken to Saint Joseph Medical Center for treatment.
The road was shut down for several hours while crash investigators worked the scene. The investigation remains active.
Our thoughts are with everyone involved as they recover from their injuries.
Can a Fleeing Driver Be Held Liable for a Crash in Joliet, IL?
A driver who flees police and causes a crash, can generally be held liable for resulting injuries under Illinois negligence law, since running a red light while evading a traffic stop falls well outside the standard of care expected of drivers. Illinois courts generally treat fleeing from police as strong evidence of negligence, since it shows a clear disregard for traffic laws and the safety of others on the road.
Crashes that involve high-speed police pursuits often lead to serious injuries, along with fractures, head trauma, and lasting complications for surviving passengers. Victims may face extended hospital stays, surgery, or rehabilitation.
Illinois follows a modified comparative negligence rule that allows recovery as long as a person is found less than 51% at fault. A car accident lawyer can help injured drivers and passengers pursue compensation from the fleeing driver’s insurance. Police reports and witness statements, including the responding officer’s own account, can play a central role in establishing what happened at the intersection.
