Woman Killed, Others Hurt in Boat Crash Near Monroe Harbor, IL

Chicago, IL (June 26, 2026) – A woman died and several others were seriously hurt after two boats collided overnight near Monroe Harbor in Chicago.

Woman Killed, Others Hurt in Boat Crash

The wreck happened just before midnight near 500 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive and 400 East Monroe. Five people were taken to hospitals with serious injuries, while four others declined medical treatment at the scene.

The Cook County Medical Examiner confirmed that a 26-year-old woman who was among those taken to the hospital later died from her injuries.

Photos and video from the area showed one of the boats badly damaged and tied to a Chicago police vessel on Lake Michigan. Emergency units could be seen carrying injured passengers to land and loading them into waiting ambulances. A U.S. Coast Guard boat also arrived to assist.

Several police cars and ambulances lined the waterfront, with some blocking nearby roads. Crews wearing life vests worked near the water as the situation unfolded.

Investigators are working to determine exactly how the two vessels collided.

Our condolences go out to the woman’s family during this difficult time.

How Do Maritime Laws Apply to Boat Accidents in Chicago, IL?

Maritime law often applies to boat accidents on Lake Michigan, alongside Illinois state boating regulations, since the lake connects to a navigable waterway. Chicago’s harbor system, which includes Monroe Harbor, Burnham Harbor, and DuSable Harbor, sees heavy boat traffic each summer, which increases the risk of collisions near the Chicago Harbor Lock and the mouth of the Chicago River.

Maritime law applies to boat accidents on Lake Michigan because federal admiralty jurisdiction covers crashes on navigable waters, even when both vessels are operated by private individuals rather than commercial entities. This means a claim that involves two recreational boats can be governed by federal maritime negligence rules rather than typical Illinois car crash law, which affects how fault is determined and what damages can be pursued.

Boat collisions can cause serious injuries, including broken bones, head trauma, drowning, and hypothermia from time spent in the water. Passengers thrown from a boat during a collision can also face lacerations from debris or propellers, and recovery from these injuries can take months depending on severity.

If a boat crash becomes fatal, a Chicago wrongful death lawyer can help victims and families understand their legal options after a serious crash. This can include reviewing safety equipment, vessel maintenance records, and operator conduct to determine what factors contributed to the collision. An attorney can also help clarify what types of compensation may be available for medical costs and other losses.
