How Is Fault Determined After a Multi-Vehicle Crash in Chicago, IL?

When a crash involves five or more vehicles, it is usually complex to determine who is responsible. In Illinois, fault is assessed under a modified comparative fault system. This means each party can be assigned a percentage of responsibility, and a person can still recover compensation as long as they are found to be 50% or less at fault.

Multi-vehicle crashes on Chicago’s South Side often involve busy, high-traffic corridors where multiple factors can contribute. Factors like vehicle speed, following distance, road conditions, and driver attention all come into play. Busy roads around this area carry significant volume throughout the day and into the evening. Investigators typically reconstruct these crashes using physical evidence, surveillance footage, and witness statements to establish a sequence of events and assign fault accordingly.

People hurt in multi-vehicle collisions frequently deal with serious injuries such as broken bones, head trauma, spinal damage, and soft tissue harm that may not fully surface until days after the crash.

Medical records, imaging results, and treatment history all play a role in the documentation of the extent of those injuries and connecting them to the collision. A Chicago car accident attorney can help review police reports, gather evidence, and work through the insurance claims of multiple parties. Legal guidance can help clarify what compensation may be available and what steps are worth taking given the details of a specific case.
