Shelby County, IL (June 1, 2025) – Four people died early Sunday morning after a car versus train crash in Shelby County.

Illinois State Police troopers responded to the crash on June 1 at 4:20 a.m. around Shelby County Road/400 North and Route 45, north of Effingham. Four people died in the incident, but the train did not derail. The roadway reopened at 9:41 a.m.

Sigel Fire Protection District Assistant Chief Ryan Dust said they were the first agency on scene, and were then followed by Illinois State Police, Neoga Fire Protection District and the railway company Canadian National.

However, officials have not commented on the incident or released any further details, including the victim’s condition, and police are still investigating the cause of the accident. Witnesses were asked to contact authorities if they had more information.
