Fatal Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois

Pedestrian fatalities continue to rise across Illinois, particularly in densely populated areas like Cook County. Busy intersections, fast-moving traffic, and distracted drivers create dangerous conditions for people walking near the roadway. Even cautious pedestrians are at risk when drivers fail to yield or pay attention.

Many of these tragic crashes stem from preventable behaviors such as speeding, distracted driving, and impaired driving. Others happen when motorists run red lights, make unsafe turns, or ignore crosswalk signals. Poor visibility at night and inadequate lighting in some areas also increase the risk for pedestrians, especially along major roads and school zones.

When a vehicle hits a pedestrian, the results are often devastating. Families must deal with sudden grief, medical costs, and funeral expenses while searching for answers. Under Illinois law, surviving relatives may file a wrongful death claim against the responsible driver to recover compensation for:

  • Funeral and burial expenses
  • Lost income and benefits
  • Medical expenses related to the victim’s final care
  • Loss of companionship

Taking legal action helps families hold negligent drivers accountable and find closure. It’s crucial to act quickly since evidence such as video footage or eyewitness accounts can disappear soon after the crash.
