Why Was the Nasal Spray Recalled?
The nasal spray recall happened because of the presence of yeast/mold as well as a microbial contamination, with one species identified as Achromobacter. Inhalation of these contaminants can lead to serious, life-threatening infections, especially in people who are immune-compromised.
What Is Achromobacter?
Achromobacter is a genus of non-fermenting, gram-negative bacteria. This bacteria can cause a wide range of infections in individuals with underlying conditions. The rarity and ever-changing nature of this bacteria makes it difficult to define its clinical features, options for treatment, and risk factors.
Achromobacter spp is resistant to several antibiotics, including most cephalosporins, aztreonam, and aminoglycosides, and it is developing a resistance to carbapenems. This can make treatment of an infection from the bacteria challenging, especially when the infection resides in the lungs of patients with cystic fibrosis or other illnesses that may compromise or weaken the immune system, and there are no standard treatment protocols for individuals with cystic fibrosis who are suffering from this type of infection.
Why Is Inhaling Mold or Yeast Dangerous?
Inhaling mold or yeast can lead to respiratory irritation, leading to coughing, wheezing, sneezing or runny nose. Additionally, this can also trigger asthma attacks or other respiratory problems in sensitive individuals.
Individuals with a weakened immune system may also experience infections in the lungs, depending on the species of mold inhaled, and can also lead to Hypersensitivity pneumonitis, a serious lung inflammation that is caused by inhaling organic dusts, mold, or animal proteins.
Inhaling yeast can lead to fungal infections or aspiration pneumonia in immune compromised individuals. Inhaling yeast can also lead to Hypersensitivity pneumonitis.

What Damages Can I Claim?
In a product liability case, there are typically three types of damages you can claim. The damages you can claim in a product liability claim include:
- Economic Damages: known as special damages, these damages are your tangible losses, including medical bills, lost wages, and lost earning capacity.
- Non-Economic Damages: known as general damages, these are your intangible losses, and are a little harder to quantify. Pain and suffering, emotional distress, PTSD, and loss of enjoyment of life are just a few examples of non-economic damages.
- Punitive Damages: While these damages are designed to punish the liable party for their egregious negligence, it is not awarded as often as the other two.
If you lost a loved one, you may be able to claim wrongful death damages as well to cover funeral expenses.
