Mattoon, IL (February 9, 2025) – According to officers with the Mattoon Police Department, one person is dead after being hit by a car while walking on Illinois Route 16 late Saturday evening, February 8.

Illinois State Police said that they responded to a crash just east of I-57 in Coles County, around midnight. After investigating, State Police said that a 22-year-old man from Benton, Wisconsin was walking in the right lane of Illinois Route 16. A 2013 Ford Taurus was traveling west on Illinois Route 16, and hit the pedestrian in the roadway. The driver, a 35-year-old man from Mattoon was not injured in the accident.
After the pedestrian was first hit in the crash, a second accident occurred. A 2014 Ford Escape was traveling west on Illinois Route 16 in the left lane. The driver, a 26-year-old woman from Mascoutah, hit the pedestrian from the first crash. She was cited for a DUI by the Mattoon Police Department. The man was pronounced dead at the site. The incident is still under investigation, however. Witnesses were asked to contact the Mattoon PD in the meantime.
