Bicycle Accidents in Illinois

Bicyclists face significant risks when sharing the road with larger vehicles, especially in suburban areas where heavy trucks frequently travel. In Illinois traffic on main routes such as State Street and East North Street has increased, creating more potential hazards for young and inexperienced riders.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), more than 800 bicyclists are killed each year in traffic crashes across the United States. Many of these tragedies occur at intersections, where visibility is limited and drivers may fail to yield properly.

When large commercial vehicles, such as semi-trucks, are involved in a crash with a bicycle, the outcome is often devastating. The weight and size difference between the two make it nearly impossible for cyclists to avoid serious or fatal injuries. Common causes of these accidents include:

  • Drivers failing to notice a bicyclist while turning or merging
  • Blind spots that obscure smaller vehicles and riders
  • Distracted or fatigued driving by truck operators
  • Poorly designed intersections or lack of dedicated bike lanes

Victims of bicycle accidents and their families may have legal options to pursue justice and compensation with the help of a compassionate personal injury lawyer. In cases involving negligence, a claim can help cover funeral expenses, medical bills, counseling, and other financial burdens associated with the loss.

If a loved one has been killed or seriously injured in a traffic crash involving a truck or other large vehicle, you don’t have to face the aftermath alone.
