Lithium-ion batteries power everything from cell phones and laptops to electric scooters and e-bikes. They’re convenient, but improper charging, damaged batteries, and incompatible equipment can create serious fire hazards. When these batteries fail, the results can be devastating.

Attorney Howard Ankin recently joined Battalion Chief Nick Steker of the Franklin Park Fire Department to demonstrate just how dangerous lithium-ion battery fires can be.
How to Prevent Lithium-Ion Battery Fires
In Ankin Law’s safety video, Battalion Chief Steker shows Howard the remains of an electric scooter whose lithium-ion battery experienced thermal runaway, causing a catastrophic residential fire.
Thermal runaway occurs when a battery overheats and triggers a chain reaction that can cause intense heat, flames, and the release of dangerous gases.
Battalion Chief Steker recommends taking several precautions when charging lithium-ion batteries:
- Use the correct charger. Only use batteries and charging equipment approved by the product manufacturer.
- Never leave charging batteries unattended. Avoid charging devices while you’re sleeping or away from home.
- Unplug fully charged batteries. Disconnect the charger when charging is complete, following the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Watch for warning signs. Stop using batteries that become unusually hot, swell, leak, make unusual noises, or produce strange odors.
- Keep exits clear. Never charge e-bikes or scooters where they could block your escape during a fire.
