Table of Contents

The manufacturer issued the recall after discovering a dangerous malfunction that allows the hedge trimmer to be activated by pressing just one of the safety or trigger controls (as opposed to pressing both at the same time to activate it). This defect can cause the blades to engage without proper intent or control—posing a significant risk to users. So far, at least 16 people have suffered laceration injuries, some of them severe, as a result of this design flaw.

Why Are the Recalled Hedge Trimmers Dangerous?
Hedge trimmer blades are fairly sharp. These blades can cause lacerations, even when the device is not powered. Hedge trimmers are especially dangerous if the product starts up unexpectedly, whether due to a safety malfunction or other issue.
Additionally, electric hedge trimmers can malfunction and cause electric shock when in use, especially if the power cord is damaged.
Even if the product is operating properly, caution should be exercised when using these products due to their sharp blades and potential for electric shock (in electric models).
Types of Injuries Resulting From Hedge Trimmer Accidents
Several types of injuries can result from hedge trimmer accidents. These injuries can range from minor cuts to accidental amputation, and in some extreme cases, death. Some common injuries resulting from hedge trimmer accidents include:
- Cuts and Lacerations: Cuts can range from mild scrapes to deeper lacerations that may result in stitches. These wounds can be caused by the blades of the hedge trimmer, whether the trimmer is powered on or not, when the blades come into contact with skin.
- Eye Injuries: When you use a hedge trimmer, it is paramount that you wear eye protection. The use of this product can lead to debris flying through the air, potentially entering your eye and causing injuries or irritation.
- Back/Joint Strain: Prolonged use of a hedge trimmer can lead to pain in the back or joints due to frequent bending, stretching, and lifting of a heavier object.
- Muscle Strains: The constant vibration of the hedge trimmer, as well as the repetitive motions that come with using such a product, can lead to muscle strain and pain.
- Electric Shock: Some electrical hedge trimmers may cause serious injury in the form of electrical shock.
Always make sure you wear the proper protective gear when using a hedge trimmer, and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for use to lessen the risk of injury.
Why Dual-Trigger Safety Mechanisms Are Important in Hedge Trimmers
Dual-trigger safety mechanisms in hedge trimmers are essential in ensuring the product does not activate unexpectedly and cause injury. Bypassing this important safety feature is a serious flaw that can lead to accident amputations or lacerations.
Can You Sue for Injuries Caused by a Recalled Product?
You can sue for injuries resulting from a recalled product. Issuing a recall does not automatically absolve a company of any liability regarding injuries resulting from their defective product. This applies even in cases where you were injured after the recall was announced, though you may need to prove that the company didn’t adequately notify consumers of the recall and risks relating to use of the product.
In some cases, you may not need to prove negligence, only that the product was used as intended and still caused injury.
