Officers and firefighters responded to the 1000 block of South Randall Road just before 9:15 p.m. after receiving reports of a serious two-vehicle collision. Emergency personnel found a blue 2013 Chevrolet Camaro and a red 2019 Nissan Versa with extensive damage following the crash.
Investigators said 40-year-old Christian Mares, of Aurora, was traveling north on Randall Road in a Chevrolet Camaro when the vehicle crossed over the double yellow centerline and entered the southbound lanes. The Camaro then collided head-on with a Nissan traveling in the opposite direction.
The driver of the Nissan, a 71-year-old woman from Geneva, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. Her identity has not been released as authorities continue efforts to notify her family.
A 26-year-old man riding in the Nissan was initially taken to Northwestern Medicine Delnor Hospital before being flown to John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital in Chicago, where he remained in critical condition.
Mares received medical treatment at Delnor Hospital before being transported to the Kane County Jail. He has been charged with Reckless Homicide, Aggravated Driving Under the Influence, and Driving Under the Influence of Alcohol.
Following the collision, Randall Road was shut down between Fargo Boulevard and Kelsinger Road for several hours as crash investigators processed the scene and gathered evidence. Traffic resumed shortly after 3:00 a.m. Sunday once the investigation at the roadway was complete.
The Geneva Police Department, Kane County Accident Reconstruction Team, Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office, and Kane County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the collision.

How Head-On Collisions Often Result in Severe Injuries
Head-on crashes are among the most devastating types of motor vehicle accidents because the force of impact is absorbed by both vehicles. Even when both vehicles are traveling at relatively moderate speeds, occupants often suffer catastrophic injuries or fatalities.
When investigators examine a collision like this one, they analyze evidence including skid marks, vehicle damage, roadway conditions, witness statements, and electronic vehicle data. These findings help determine exactly how the crash occurred and whether criminal or civil liability may exist.
Victims injured in a head-on collision accident frequently require extensive medical treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term care.
DUI Allegations and Civil Liability
Criminal charges do not automatically determine the outcome of a personal injury or wrongful death claim. Prosecutors pursue criminal penalties, while injured victims and surviving family members may seek financial compensation through a separate civil case.
Evidence collected during the criminal investigation, including toxicology results, crash reconstruction reports, and witness testimony, may also become valuable during a civil lawsuit involving a DUI accident.
Legal Rights After a Fatal Car Crash
Families who lose a loved one in a fatal collision often face emotional hardships along with unexpected financial burdens. Illinois law may allow eligible family members to pursue compensation for funeral expenses, loss of financial support, and other damages through a wrongful death claim.
Working with an experienced fatal car accident lawyer can help families understand their legal rights and available options after losing a loved one in a fatal crash. A knowledgeable wrongful death attorney can identify potential sources of compensation, preserve evidence before it disappears, communicate with insurance companies, and help families understand the legal deadlines that may apply to their case.
Why Preserving Evidence Matters
Evidence following a serious crash can disappear quickly. Surveillance footage may be overwritten, witnesses’ memories can fade, and damaged vehicles are often repaired or salvaged.
Preserving police reports, medical records, photographs, surveillance footage, witness contact information, and other documentation after an accident can strengthen a potential insurance claim or lawsuit while helping investigators establish exactly what happened.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a DUI arrest automatically make someone liable in civil court?
Not necessarily. Criminal and civil cases are separate proceedings, although evidence presented in the criminal case may also support a civil claim.
Can passengers injured in a crash file a personal injury claim?
Yes. Passengers are rarely responsible for causing a collision and may have the right to seek compensation for their injuries. Depending on the circumstances, a passenger may be able to file a claim against the at-fault driver’s insurance, the driver of the vehicle they were riding in, or multiple parties if more than one driver contributed to the crash. An experienced personal injury attorney can evaluate the facts of the accident and explain the legal options available.
How long does a crash investigation usually take?
The timeline varies depending on the complexity of the collision, the number of agencies involved, and whether accident reconstruction or forensic testing is required.
Should I speak with the insurance company after a serious car accident?
You should report the accident to your insurance company promptly, but it’s wise to be cautious when discussing the details of the crash with any insurer. Insurance adjusters may ask for recorded statements or request that you accept a settlement before the full extent of your injuries or losses is known. Speaking with an attorney before providing detailed statements or signing documents can help protect your legal rights.
