Available Legal Options After a Pedestrian Hit-and-Run in Illinois?
In Illinois, a person hurt in a hit-and-run pedestrian accident may have the option to pursue a claim through the at-fault driver’s insurance if that driver is identified, or through uninsured motorist coverage if the driver is not located.
State law requires drivers to stop and give aid after a crash, and leaving the scene can lead to criminal charges. From a civil standpoint, injured pedestrians can explore insurance claims to address medical bills, lost wages, and other related losses.
Pedestrian collisions often lead to serious injuries because there is little physical protection in an impact. People may suffer head trauma, fractures, internal injuries, or damage to the spine. Some symptoms appear immediately, while others develop later.
Early medical evaluation not only supports recovery but also creates documentation that may connect injuries directly to the accident.
Insurance companies review medical records, crash reports, and witness statements when assessing a claim. In hit-and-run cases, uninsured motorist coverage can play a key role. A pedestrian accident lawyer can help explain how this coverage works, organize paperwork, and communicate with insurers.
Legal guidance can clarify what types of compensation may be available depending on the facts of the collision.
