The Dangers of Milk Allergies

A milk allergy is caused by an atypical immune response to milk and products containing milk. While cow’s milk is usually the culprit, milk from other mammals may also produce a reaction. There are two main proteins found in milk that typically cause the allergic reaction. Casein, which is found in the solids (curds) of milk that curdles, and whey, which is found in the liquid part of milk that remains after curdling.

An allergic reaction can occur anywhere from several minutes to a few hours after exposure, and reactions can be mild or severe, depending on the person. Those with allergies to milk may experience a range of symptoms post exposure, including:

  • Wheezing
  • Vomiting
  • Itchy or tingly sensation around the mouth or lips
  • Swelling of the lips, tongue or throat
  • Coughing or shortness of breath
  • Hives
  • Digestive Problems, such as loose stool or abdominal pain
  • Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis is a serious, life-threatening condition that constricts the airways and impairs the affected individual’s ability to breathe. It can also cause itching, facial flushing, and shock, with a drop in blood pressure. It is a medical emergency and requires treatment from an epinephrine shot, usually administered in the form of an EpiPen.

In addition, individuals with lactose intolerance (a condition in which an individual is unable to process a type of sugar present in dairy products) may experience bloating, diarrhea, gas, and abdominal pain after consuming milk and products containing milk.

Are There Protections in Place for Consumers?

The FDA enforces a set of regulations that requires food production companies to list ingredients on packaged foods and beverages, and there are more labeling requirements surrounding specific foods and substances that are known to be major food allergens. A law passed in 2004 declared eight foods to be major food allergens, including milk, crustacean shellfish, fish, wheat, soybeans, peanuts, and tree nuts. A subsequent law passed in 2021 declared sesame a major food allergen as well, adding it to the list of major food allergens recognized by the United States.

Companies are required to ensure that food labels identify any major food allergens used in the manufacturing of their products. The allergen source must appear either in the ingredients list in parentheses following a listed ingredient, or after the ingredients list in a “contains” statement.

More information about the recall can be found on the FDA’s recalls, market withdrawals, & safety alerts page on their website.
