Chicago, IL. (August 23rd, 2024) – Samsung has issued a recall on over one million electric stoves that were sold nationwide between 2013 and 2024. The stoves were linked to roughly 250 fires that resulted in dozens of injuries, major property damage, and the deaths of at least seven pets.
The recall involves Samsung’s slide-in electric stoves with front-mounted knobs. Due to their design, these knobs can be turned on accidentally by people or pets. This poses a fire hazard, especially if objects are left on the stove.
What Models Are Affected By The Recall?
Samsung stated that the models affected by the recall were produced in Thailand and sold at Best Buy, Costco, Home Depot, Lowe’s, and various other retail stores, as well as on Samsung’s website. These products were sold from May 2013 to August 2024. Prices of these stove tops ranged from $1250 to $3050. Model numbers affected by this recall include

How to Lower the Risk of Accidental Fire
It is good practice for anyone to take extra safety precautions around stoves, especially people who have children or small pets. While these appliances are convenient and make day to day life easier, they still pose a serious hazard if proper precautions are not taken.
For people who are using their stoves without knob locks or covers, it is advised to keep children and pets away from the knobs. Make sure that the knobs are turned off when the stove is not in use, and double-check them before leaving your home or going to bed. Never place anything on top of the stove when it is not in use. Samsung also noted that people who have Wi-Fi enabled ranges can use the Samsung SmartThings app to receive “cook top on” notifications when a burner is turned on.
Additionally, if you have children or pets and your range is not one that is covered by the recall, you should invest in some kind of safety knobs or covers to reduce the risk of a burner getting turned on accidentally.
Risks Extend Beyond Samsung Products
Samsung products may not be the only ranges posing fire risks. According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), these incidents are happening with both gas and electric stoves produced by various manufacturers. Data reveals that between 2018 and May 2024, there were 338 reports of ranges and cooktops accidentally getting activated. These incidents resulted in 31 nonfatal injuries and two fatalities. At least 10 manufacturers were involved.
