Chicago, IL – Palmer Candy co. Recall Upgraded Due to Salmonella Risk

Signs and Risks of Salmonella Infection

Salmonella is a common bacterial infection known to affect the intestinal tract. The bacteria that cause this infection is typically found living in the intestines of humans and animals. The bacteria is shed through stool, and is typically spread through consumption of contaminated food or water.

Some infected individuals show no symptoms, however, typically, most people develop diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps within 8–72 hours of exposure.

Diarrhea can cause severe dehydration that requires medical attention, and there is a risk of life-threatening complications if the infection spreads beyond the intestinal tract. Some variants of Salmonella can cause typhoid fever, which can be deadly.

Some symptoms of Salmonella infection can include diarrhea, stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, headache, and blood in stool. These symptoms typically last a few days, though diarrhea can persist for 10 days, and it may be months before your bowels return to their normal stool habits.

While most people infected with Salmonella do not need medical attention, it is wise to contact a health provider if the infected individual is an infant, young child, older adult, or someone with a weakened immune system, especially if symptoms last more than a few days, causes high fever or bloody stool, or appears to be causing dehydration.
