The accident happened around 12:25 a.m. at the intersection of 8700 South Cottage Grove Avenue. Officers with the Chicago Police Department responded to the scene and discovered two damaged vehicles: a gray sedan and a white SUV.
Initial reports suggest the 25-year-old man driving the gray sedan may have failed to obey a traffic signal before entering the intersection and crashing into the SUV. Emergency medical teams arrived quickly and transported the sedan’s driver to Trinity Hospital. Police reported that he was in good condition following the collision.
The driver of the white SUV, identified only as an adult male, was found in critical condition. He was rushed to the University of Chicago Hospital for treatment. The identities of both drivers have not been released at this time.
No one has been taken into custody, and police said citations are still pending. Investigators from the Major Accidents Investigation Unit (MAIU) are handling the case and are working to determine the exact direction of travel and contributing factors leading up to the crash.
We send our sincere wishes for a full recovery to both individuals injured in this collision.
Car Accidents in Chicago
Crashes that occur at intersections are among the most dangerous, especially in busy urban environments like Chicago. With constant vehicle movement, multiple traffic signals, and pedestrian activity, intersections are a common site for serious collisions. The recent crash on South Cottage Grove Avenue is a tragic example of how quickly these accidents can turn devastating.
Intersection crashes can happen for many reasons, including:
- Running red lights or stop signs: Drivers may try to beat the light or fail to notice signals entirely, causing side-impact collisions.
- Distracted driving: Looking at a phone, eating, or even adjusting music can result in a moment of inattention at the worst possible time.
- Speeding through intersections: Speed makes it harder to stop in time or react to cross-traffic.
When injuries occur due to another driver’s negligence, victims may have a legal right to pursue compensation. A knowledgeable car accident attorney in Chicago can help with filing a claim and recovering damages for medical bills, lost income, vehicle repairs, and emotional distress.
