Understanding Listeria Monocytogenes
Listeria monocytogenes is a harmful bacterium that can contaminate food and cause listeriosis, a serious infection. Listeriosis primarily affects older adults, pregnant women, newborns, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may experience short-term symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea. Listeriosis can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, potentially leading to miscarriages, stillbirths, or severe illness in newborns. In severe cases, it can also lead to life-threatening infections in newborns or older adults
The bacterium is commonly found in soil, water, and animal feces. It can contaminate various foods, including vegetables, raw milk, cheeses, and processed meats like the deli products recalled by Boar’s Head Provisions Co. Listeria can grow at refrigeration temperatures, making it a persistent threat in both home and commercial kitchens.
Actions Taken By Boar’s Head Provisions Co.
In response to the contamination, Boar’s Head Provisions Co. has ceased production of the affected products and is working closely with the USDA to identify the source of the contamination and prevent future occurrences. The company urges consumers who have purchased these products not to consume them and to return them to the place of purchase for a full refund.
Consumers are advised to check their refrigerators and freezers for these products. If any of the recalled items are found, they should be disposed of immediately or returned to the retailer.
As of July 25, 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) had identified 34 cases of Listeriosis across 13 states, resulting in 33 hospitalizations and two fatalities. The investigation is ongoing.
