Chicago, IL – Four Injured, Including Two Officers, in Loop Crash at S Wabash Ave & E Ida B. Wells Dr

Chicago, IL (April 26, 2026) – A crash left four people injured, including two officers, on Saturday, April 25, in Chicago’s Loop neighborhood. The accident happened in the 500 block of South Wabash Avenue at its intersection with East Ida B. Wells Drive just before 5 a.m.

Initial reports indicate that a black Jeep SUV traveling westbound on Ida B. Wells Drive struck a marked squad car heading southbound on Wabash Avenue. Investigators believe the SUV driver failed to obey a traffic signal before the impact.

Emergency crews responded after receiving reports of the crash. Rescue personnel had to cut through the squad car’s door to free one of the officers, who was pinned inside the vehicle, before placing them on a stretcher.

Paramedics treated the injured individuals at the scene before transporting them to nearby hospitals. The two officers and the SUV driver were taken to local hospitals for further care.

All four people who required hospital transport were listed in good condition. Both officers suffered non-life-threatening injuries. The SUV driver, a 26-year-old man, was treated for a cut to the head. A 26-year-old female passenger from the SUV was hospitalized with minor injuries, also in good condition. A second female passenger, age 25, declined medical attention at the scene.

Following the collision, the driver attempted to flee on foot but was taken into custody shortly after. Authorities have not yet filed charges.

The investigation into the cause of the crash remains ongoing.

Our thoughts remain with those hurt as they recover.

What to Do After a Car Accident in Chicago, IL?

After a car accident in Chicago, there are several important steps you should take to protect your safety and legal rights. These include seeking medical attention, moving to safety, contacting authorities, gathering evidence, exchanging information, notifying your insurance company, and speaking with a lawyer.

If you are hurt, getting medical attention is the most important action you can take right away. Even if you feel fine at the scene, some injuries take hours or days to appear. A medical evaluation creates a record that can be important later.

If you can do so safely, you should move to a safe area away from traffic. Staying in the roadway after a crash can put you at additional risk. If your vehicle is drivable, you can move it to the shoulder or a nearby lot.

You must also contact the Chicago police and report the crash as soon as possible. Officers will create an official report that documents what happened at the scene. This report can help support your claim.

Gathering as much evidence as you can will help later on. Take photos of vehicle positions, damage, road conditions, and any visible injuries. If there are witnesses nearby, you can ask for their contact information.

Before you leave the scene, you should exchange information with the other driver. That includes names, contact details, license plate numbers, and insurance information. Keeping this information organized from the start can make things easier later on.

You should also notify your insurance company as soon as possible. Most policies require you to report an accident within a reasonable time frame. Your insurer will guide you through their specific process.
