What Products Are Affected?

The contaminated product recall encompasses 17 different frozen shake products distributed primarily to long-term care facilities throughout the U.S. Manufactured and supplied by Prairie Farms, the recalled products were not available for retail sale. Lyons Magnus distributed the recalled products. According to the FDA, 38 illnesses and 11 deaths have been associated with the strain of Listeria monocytogenes potentially present in these products.

A full list of the products affected by the recall can be found on the FDA website.

Lyons Magnus and the FDA are asking people not to consume or provide these products to patients for consumption. If they have recalled products in their possession, they should quarantine them and visit the Lyons Magnus website

Why Are Contaminated Products Dangerous?

The recall stems from potential contamination with Listeria monocytogenes, a dangerous bacterium that can cause severe illness. Pregnant women, older adults, and those with weakened immune systems are at particular risk. Listeria infections can lead to serious complications, including meningitis, septicemia, and miscarriage in pregnant women.

People who consume contaminated products may experience symptoms such as fever, muscle aches, nausea, and diarrhea. In severe cases, the infection can spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract and become life-threatening.

Nutritional supplements like these shakes are often consumed by people who are already dealing with health challenges. The very individuals who rely on these products for their well-being are the ones most at risk from Listeria contamination.

What Should Consumers and Healthcare Providers Do?

To ensure their safety and that of any at-risk individuals in their care, those who have the recalled products should:

Refrain from Consuming Contaminated Products

Anyone with these products should discard them immediately or return them to the distributor. Even if the product looks and smells fine, it may still be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.

Check with Supplier

Healthcare facilities should review their inventory, remove affected products, and ensure staff members are informed of the recall. Taking such steps may help prevent any accidental consumption.

Monitor for Symptoms

Anyone who has consumed one of these shakes and experiences fever, muscle aches, diarrhea, or other symptoms should seek medical attention right away. Symptoms of a Listeria infection can develop days or even weeks after exposure.

Sanitize Storage Areas

Consumers who had the recalled products stored in their refrigerators or freezers should thoroughly clean and sanitize the affected areas. Listeria can survive in cold environments, and may spread to other foods.

Report Adverse Reactions

Those who experience illness after consuming the recalled shakes should report the incident to the FDA’s MedWatch program. The program helps track potential outbreaks and prevent further cases.

Consumer Rights in Illinois

Consumers in Illinois who have been affected by the contaminated supplement shakes have several rights and legal options. Under Illinois product liability laws, companies that manufacture or distribute unsafe food products can be held accountable for harm caused to consumers. Those affected may have the right to:

  • File a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General. The Attorney General’s Consumer Protection Division can investigate and take action against companies that fail to ensure product safety.
  • Pursue legal action. If an individual has suffered illness or injury from consuming the contaminated shakes, they may have grounds for a personal injury or product liability lawsuit. Compensation could cover medical expenses, lost wages, and other damages.
  • Join a class action lawsuit. In cases of widespread harm, affected consumers may participate in class action lawsuits against parties responsible for manufacturing and distributing dangerous or defective products.
  • Report food safety violations. Illinois residents can report unsafe food products to the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) or the FDA to help prevent further harm.

Consumers who believe they have been affected should consult with a legal professional to explore their rights and learn how I can prove a product defect.

Left untreated, Listeria infections may result in serious infections or death. If you became ill, or lost a loved one, after consuming one of the affected supplemental shakes, the experienced product liability lawyers at Ankin Law in Chicago are here to help.
