What Is Being Done About the Recall?

Currently, August Egg Company is diverting their eggs to an egg breaking facility that pasteurizes eggs and kills potential foodborne pathogens.

Consumers affected by this recall are urged to return the eggs to the place of purchase for a full refund. Do not consume the recalled eggs, and do not give them to other people or pets.

What Is Salmonella?

Salmonella, also known as salmonellosis, is a bacterial infection that causes diarrhea, fever, and stomach pains. The bacteria invades and destroys the cells of your intestines, making it hard for your body to absorb water, which causes the stomach cramps and diarrhea. Salmonella is one of the most common forms of food poisoning. In the U.S. alone, more than a million individuals are affected by these bacteria each year.

While anyone can get Salmonella, and the disease typically clears up within a few days on its own, individuals over the age of 65 or under the age of 12 months, individuals with compromised immune systems, or individuals with sickle cell disease are at a higher risk of more serious illnesses relating to the bacterial infection.

Symptoms of Salmonella

Symptoms of Salmonella can appear anywhere from a few hours to a few days after exposure. Symptoms typically affect your GI tract (stomach and intestines) and can include diarrhea, vomiting, fever, stomach pains/cramps, nausea, and headaches. Additionally, in some instances, you may have blood in your stool.

Symptoms can last between four and seven days, and they typically go away within a few days, even without treatment.

Complications of Salmonella

In some cases, Salmonella can lead to more serious complications. This can include dehydration, Bacteremia, sepsis, Osteomyelitis, and reactive arthritis. Individuals with weakened immune systems, older people, and young children are more likely to develop serious complications than a typical healthy individual.

While rare, it is possible to die from Salmonella. Out of the millions of people infected a year, only around 420 actually die from this illness.

How Does Salmonella Spread?

One of the most common ways individuals become infected with Salmonella is through eating undercooked or improperly prepped foods. This includes meats, eggs, fruits, and vegetables.

You can also become infected through contaminated water, or by drinking unpasteurized milk.

Additionally, you can contract Salmonella through infected animals and people. Many animals can become infected with Salmonella. This includes reptiles, amphibians, birds, farm animals, and pets, such as dogs and cats.

Any uncooked food is at risk of being contaminated with Salmonella, however, poultry and eggs are one of the most common culprits.

You can lessen the chances of contracting Salmonella by maintaining a clean cooking environment. Wash any surfaces that came into contact with raw foods. Wash your fruits and vegetables before consuming them. Wash your hands before and after cooking. Don’t drink or use untreated water or unpasteurized milk. Always wash your hands after handling pets or their food and water dishes, enclosures, litter boxes, feces, and toys.
