A Chicagoan Creating Opportunities in The Craft Brewing Industry

For years, she was someone who enjoyed a brew in one of the many establishments in Chicago.

But when Mickey Bryant wanted to see a more diverse crowd in the craft brewing space, she decided to blend her passion with her profession.

An instructional design & technology consultant by trade, this Chicagoan decided to begin “Black and Brew Chicago,” a non-profit that’s helping underrepresented communities get involved in brewing.

“How can we design a course or design an experience for people to not only taste beer but to understand all of the opportunities that are in the craft beer industry,” was the question that Mickey asked – and her answer was a series of classes.

Complete with its own workbook, Bryant goes around Chicagoland to conduct sessions that teach the ins and outs of making beer. Starting with the history of the beverage through the brewing process itself, Mickey shows the sophistication of craft beer and the opportunities in the industry.

Since she began “Black and Brew Chicago,” a number of people who’ve taken her course have gone onto to become brewers or take on other roles in the restaurant business.

“The most rewarding thing is to see people have that ‘AHA’ moment and to see people feel welcome in a space in a place that they once didn’t think they belonged,” said Bryant.
