Cyclist Killed in Wreck on S Halsted St in Chicago, IL

Chicago, IL (June 6, 2026) – A 35-year-old man died on Friday afternoon, June 5, after a crash on the 3200 block of South Halsted Street in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood. The collision happened around 4:40 p.m.

Witnesses said the cyclist was riding in a bike lane when a driver opened a car door in his path. He lost control and was then hit by a semi-truck traveling behind him.

Emergency units took the man to a local hospital, where he later died. The bike lane along that stretch of South Halsted Street does not have a concrete barrier.

Authorities had not confirmed the witness accounts, released the man’s name, or announced any citations at the time of this report. The Chicago Police Department continues to review the collision.

Our deepest sympathies go out to the family and loved ones of the man who lost his life.

Who Can Be Held Liable for a Dooring Accident in Chicago, IL?

In Illinois, a driver who opens a car door into a cyclist’s path may be held liable for the harm that follows. State law requires drivers to check for traffic before opening a vehicle door. If another vehicle then hits the cyclist, that driver’s actions may also be reviewed.

Along busy Chicago roads, dooring crashes create serious risks for cyclists. South Halsted Street, North Milwaukee Avenue, and West Madison Street carry heavy bike and vehicle traffic each day. When bike lanes lack barriers, riders have little space between parked cars and moving traffic.

After a fatal bicycle crash, the victim’s family may have the right to bring a wrongful death claim. Illinois law allows surviving relatives to seek compensation for losses tied to the death. The strength of the claim depends on the facts of the crash.

When a crash involves more than one vehicle, liability can become harder to sort out. Each driver’s conduct before the collision must be reviewed separately. Witness statements, traffic cameras, and police records can help show what happened.

For grieving families, the legal process can feel difficult to face alone. A Chicago wrongful death lawyer can explain each step, review the evidence, and deal with the insurance companies involved. Early legal help can keep the case moving while the family focuses on healing.
