Police say the 73-year-old woman was driving a Subaru at a high rate of speed when she slammed into a minivan near the intersection. She then struck two more vehicles before her Subaru rolled over. The sequence of collisions brought the total number of vehicles involved to four.

Emergency units transported the 73-year-old driver to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. Two other people, including a child, were also taken to the hospital following the crash. Both were reported to have non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities are still investigating the collision and have not released further details about the conditions of those hospitalized.

Our thoughts remain with all those affected, and we hope for a full recovery for everyone receiving care.

Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Illinois?

After a car accident in Illinois, the at-fault driver’s liability insurance is generally responsible for covering the medical bills of those injured in the crash. Illinois follows a fault-based system, meaning the person who caused the collision bears financial responsibility for the resulting damages. However, the process of recovering those costs is not always straightforward, and several factors can affect how and when medical expenses get paid.

In the immediate aftermath of a crash, injured people often face medical bills before any insurance settlement is reached. Health insurance can help cover treatment costs in the short term, but it may seek reimbursement later once a settlement is obtained.

Illinois follows a modified comparative fault rule, which means that if an injured person is found to be partly responsible for the accident, their compensation may be reduced by their percentage of fault. If a person is found to be more than 50 percent at fault, they may not recover compensation at all. This makes it important to gather evidence early, including police reports, witness statements, and medical records, to support a claim accurately.

Multi-vehicle crashes often involve multiple insurance companies, each representing a different driver. Sorting out which insurer covers which portion of the damages can become complicated quickly. Medical bills, lost wages, and other expenses may involve negotiations with several parties at once, making the process harder to manage without guidance.

A car accident lawyer can help identify all available insurance coverage, communicate with insurers on a person’s behalf, and work to ensure that medical expenses and other losses are properly accounted for in any settlement. Legal guidance can also help prevent common mistakes, such as accepting an early settlement offer that does not fully cover long-term medical needs.
