Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Illinois?
In Illinois, medical bills after a car accident are usually paid through the at-fault driver’s insurance. Because Illinois follows a fault-based insurance system, the driver who caused the crash may be responsible for covering injury-related costs. However, injured people often begin treatment before liability is fully determined, which means their own health insurance or medical coverage may initially handle some expenses.
Car accidents can lead to a range of medical needs. Some people require emergency treatment, while others visit doctors later for neck pain, back injuries, or headaches. Follow-up care may include imaging tests, physical therapy, medications, or specialist visits. Medical records and billing statements often become important documents when insurance companies review claims related to an accident.
Insurance claims after a crash can involve several steps. Adjusters may review police reports, medical documentation, and statements from those involved. During this process, people sometimes receive bills while the claim is still being evaluated. A car accident lawyer can help review records, explain how the insurance process works, and clarify what types of compensation may be available for treatment costs, lost income, or other related expenses.
