NHTSA Recalls Allwin Powersports Motorcycle Helmets Over Head Injury Risk

January 22nd, 2026 (Chicago, IL) – The NHTSA has recalled approximately 3,714 Allwin Powersports LS2 Rebellion model motorcycle helmets over head injury risk. This recall was issued after routine testing by the NHTSA discovered a noncompliance issue regarding impact resistance on the right side of the helmet.

Why Were These Motorcycle Helmets Recalled?

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued this recall after routine compliance testing revealed that the right side of the helmet failed to meet federal impact resistance standards. Motorcycle helmets sold in the United States must comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 218, which establishes minimum performance requirements for impact protection.

According to the NHTSA, the affected Allwin Powersports LS2 Rebellion helmets may not adequately protect a rider’s head during a crash, increasing the risk of serious head injury or death. The agency continues to investigate the cause of the defect.

Only LS2 Rebellion helmets in sizes XL and XXL, manufactured between June 2024 and July 2025, are included in this recall. No other models or sizes are affected at this time.

Why Defective Motorcycle Helmets Are Especially Dangerous

Motorcycle riders lack many of the built-in safety features found in passenger vehicles, such as seatbelts, airbags, and a protective steel frame. As a result, helmets are the primary line of defense against catastrophic head injuries in a crash.

When a helmet fails to meet impact resistance standards, it may:

  • Crack or compress improperly on impact
  • Fail to absorb crash energy
  • Allow excessive force to reach the brain

Studies consistently show that helmets significantly reduce the risk of death and traumatic brain injury in motorcycle crashes. They lessen the chance of death from a motorcycle accident by between 37%-42%, and reduce the chances of a TBI (traumatic brain injury) by 69%. When a helmet is defective, however, riders may unknowingly face a much higher risk of permanent injury or fatal outcomes.

In the case of the recalled helmets, routine testing discovered that impact to the right side of the helmet may result in serious injury to the wearer, which can lead to traumatic brain injuries if the accident is severe enough, or death.

The Impacts of a Traumatic Brain Injury

Traumatic brain injuries disrupt the normal functions of the brain. This can cause a wide range of issues regarding cognitive, physical, and emotional functions. This includes confusion, headaches, dizziness, long-term memory problems, depression, anxiety, personality changes, and difficulty with problem-solving, focus, and daily activities. The seriousness of a TBI varies based on the location and severity of the injury, and often requires extensive recovery and rehabilitation. Some common side effects of a TBI include:

  • Physical: headache, fatigue, dizziness, balance problems, vision/hearing problems, seizures, and light and sound sensitivities.
  • Cognitive: confusion, memory loss, learning, reasoning, decision-making, and difficulty concentrating.
  • Behavioral/Emotional: anxiety, depression, mood swings, irritability, personality changes, and increased risk of addiction.

Traumatic brain injuries can lead to bleeding or swelling in the brain and long-term or permanent disabilities resulting from the brain not being able to heal fully from the injury.

What Should Consumers Do Now?

Consumers who own one of the recalled helmets should stop using it immediately and request a replacement helmet. Continued use could place the rider at risk of serious injury in the event of an accident.

Retailers who have the helmet in their inventory will have a credit put on their account for the purchased amount of stock, and should pull the remaining affected helmets from their shelves.

What Damages Can I Claim?

As with any product liability case, there are three main damages that you can claim in your lawsuit. The damages you can claim include:

  • Economic Damages: These damages are known as special damages, and encompass the tangible, financial losses you incurred due to your injuries, including medical bills (past and future, relating to your injuries), lost wages, and lost earning capacity.
  • Non-Economic Damages: These damages are known as your general damages, and they include all your intangible losses, such as PTSD, emotional distress, loss of enjoyment of life, and loss of consortium.
  • Punitive Damages: In some instances where the other party’s actions were considered particularly egregious in their negligence, courts may award victims punitive damages. However, as these damages are designed to punish the liable party for their actions and discourage similar behaviors in the future, they are rarely awarded.

In the event your loved one died due to a defective motorcycle helmet, you may also be able to claim wrongful death damages, which includes funeral expenses and loss of future financial support.

Should I Contact an Attorney?

If you suffered losses due to a defective product, it is highly recommended that you contact an experienced product liability attorney to help you with your case. An attorney will be able to help you navigate the legal process of filing your claim, and they will keep you informed throughout the process, ensuring that you are aware of any communications and settlement offers that may come from the liable party while making sure your rights are protected throughout the process. Additionally, should a reasonable settlement offer not be reached, your attorney can take your case to court and represent you. You don’t have to go through this alone.
