Pedestrian Accidents in Illinois

Pedestrian accidents across Illinois remain a serious safety concern. Each year, dozens of people are injured or killed while walking near busy intersections and main roads. These accidents often happen suddenly and leave families dealing with devastating losses.

According to the Illinois Department of Transportation, hundreds of fatal pedestrian accidents occur statewide every year, with older adults being among the most vulnerable. Many of these tragedies happen in areas without crosswalks, poor lighting, or heavy evening traffic when visibility is low.

Drivers and pedestrians alike share responsibility for staying alert. Some of the most common causes of pedestrian crashes include:

  • Drivers failing to yield at crosswalks or intersections – Many collisions happen when drivers rush through intersections without noticing pedestrians who have the right of way.
  • Speeding or distracted driving – Using a cellphone or driving too fast reduces a driver’s ability to react to pedestrians crossing the road.
  • Poor roadway design or inadequate lighting – Dim lighting, missing sidewalks, or poorly marked crossings can make it difficult for both drivers and pedestrians to see one another.
  • Pedestrians crossing outside designated areas – Crossing mid-block or in unmarked zones increases the risk of being struck by oncoming vehicles.

When a pedestrian accident leads to fatal injuries, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim. This can help cover funeral expenses, lost income, medical costs, and emotional suffering. It also holds negligent drivers accountable for their actions.

An experienced wrongful death attorney can help surviving relatives understand their legal rights, investigate the cause of the crash, and pursue compensation for funeral costs, emotional distress, and loss of financial support. Working with a lawyer also ensures that negligent drivers are held accountable, helping to promote safer roads for everyone.
