Chicago, IL (September 12, 2024) – A tragic multi-vehicle crash occurred Thursday morning, September 11, on the Magnificent Mile after a smash-and-grab robbery at a store in the Gold Coast. The crash left an innocent bystander dead, marking a tragic end to what began as a robbery.

The incident started just before 5 a.m. when a group of suspects used a pick-up truck to break into the store, located in the 100 block of East Walton Street.
The store’s windows and doors were shattered as suspects ran in and out of the store, grabbing merchandise. Cell phone footage captured the chaos as the suspects fled the scene, leaving shattered glass behind.
At least nine suspects escaped in multiple vehicles, abandoning the pick-up truck. One of the getaway vehicles, a Kia Stinger, sped southbound on Michigan Avenue. At the Ohio Street intersection, the Kia collided with a Honda CRV heading eastbound.
The driver of the Honda, a man in his 40s who had no connection to the robbery, was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Five suspects inside the Kia sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were taken into custody and transported to local hospitals.
This incident is still under investigation as authorities work to piece together the details of the crash and the robbery.
Our deepest sympathies go out to the family of the deceased, and we hope the injured recover quickly.
