Preemption, IL – Two Killed in Head-on Accident on US Hwy 67

Preemption, IL (July 25, 2025) — Two people are dead after a head-on collision in Mercer County on Wednesday, July 23.

Mercer County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a traffic crash on U.S. 67 near Preemption on July 23. Witnesses reported that a southbound vehicle crossed the center line and struck a northbound vehicle, causing a head-on collision between the two. The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead at the scene.

The drivers’ names are being withheld, pending notification of family by the Mercer County Coroner’s Office. Deputies were assisted at the scene by the Matherville Fire Department, Sherrard Fire Department, Advanced Medical Transport, Illinois State Police, Illinois Department of Transportation, and the Mercer County Coroner. The crash remains under investigation by the Mercer County Sheriff’s Office and Illinois State Police. The roadway was temporarily closed as police investigated, but the inquiry is still ongoing.
