Symptoms of Salmonella

Common symptoms of Salmonella include diarrhea (can be bloody), stomach cramps, fever, nausea, vomiting, chills, and headaches. Typically, symptoms last a few days to a week, and the diarrhea can last 10 days, but it can be a month before bowel movements return to normal. Symptoms can be more severe in infants, young children, elderly people, or those who have weakened immune systems.

Most healthy individuals who contract Salmonella don’t need to seek medical treatment. However, if the individual affected by the illness is an infant, elderly, a young child, or someone with a weakened immune system, medical evaluation may be advised. Patients should contact their healthcare provider if symptoms last more than a few days, results in high fever or bloody stool, or appears to be causing dehydration.

Some varieties of Salmonella bacteria can cause typhoid fever. Typhoid fever is a potentially fatal illness if not treated promptly, and is most common in developing countries.

In some cases, Salmonella infection can spread to other parts of the body, such as blood, brain and spinal cord membranes, bones, and joints, which can lead to further complications such as bacteremia, meningitis, osteomyelitis, and septic arthritis. Some of these infections can have long-lasting effects.

Some people have also reported developing reactive arthritis in response to a Salmonella infection. This can last from months to years and may result in chronic arthritis.

What Damages Are Available in a Product Liability Lawsuit Involving a Cucumber Recall?

When companies produce unreasonably dangerous products, it can have a disastrous fallout for those who purchase these products, use, or consume them. Luckily, if a company that produced or distributed the products failed in their duty of care owed to consumers, they can be held liable for:

Economic Damages

Often referred to as special damages, economic damages covers financial losses such as lost wages, medical bills, and lost earning capacity. These losses are easier to assign a financial value to because they are evidenced with statements or receipts.

Non-Economic Damages

These damages, often referred to as general damages, cover losses that are subjective. They can include loss of consortium, loss of enjoyment of life, pain and suffering, etc. An experienced product liability attorney can assist you in adding up the value of your non-economic damages.

Punitive Damages

These damages are rarely awarded in product liability cases. However, if it is discovered that the liable party was aware of the dangers of their product, and continued to sell or distribute the product while hiding the dangers, injured individuals may be able to claim punitive damages.

How Does Salmonella Contamination Happen in Produce?

There are many instances in which produce can become contaminated with Salmonella. It can happen any time during the cultivation, handling, and processing of the product and may occur for a number of reasons. Some common causes of Salmonella contamination include

  • Contaminated Water: In some cases, water can be contaminated with Salmonella. This can lead to Salmonella contaminating the crop the water was used on.
  • Contaminated Soil: Salmonella can survive in soil and be transferred to plants through contact, resulting in a contaminated product.
  • Animal Feces: Salmonella can also be transferred through fecal matter. When an infected animal’s feces is used to fertilize the soil, or it is used as compost, it can lead to the resulting produce being contaminated as well.
  • Improper Worker Hygiene: If a staff member that is handling the product has come into contact with Salmonella and hasn’t washed their hands, the bacteria can be transferred to produce.

Additionally, if the produce somehow came into contact with a surface that had been previously touched by raw meat, but not properly disinfected, it can lead to the produce becoming contaminated with Salmonella.

To protect yourself from Salmonella, it is recommended that you wash your produce before peeling or eating it. Additionally, keep any produce you have separate from raw meats and eggs, and wash your hands after handling any raw food.
