Chicago, IL (June 13, 2026) – A stolen SUV slammed into two CTA buses on Friday evening, June 12, on South State Street in Chicago’s Near South Side. The impact left six passengers injured.

According to the Chicago Police Department, officers attempted to stop the SUV around 8:17 p.m. in the 2200 block of South State Street. The 28-year-old driver continued southbound before crashing into a CTA bus traveling in the same direction. The SUV then crossed into oncoming traffic and collided with a second CTA bus heading northbound on State Street.

Emergency crews responded and transported six bus passengers to nearby hospitals for treatment. Authorities have not released details about the extent of their injuries. Neither bus driver suffered injuries in the crash.

Officers arrested the SUV driver at the scene. The driver was not injured, and while citations had not been issued as of this report, criminal charges remain pending.

The Chicago Police Department continues to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

We hope all six injured passengers make a full and speedy recovery.

What Compensation Can Bus Passengers Recover After a Crash in Chicago, IL?

If you were hurt while riding a CTA bus, you may recover compensation for medical bills, lost income, and pain and suffering. Passengers rarely share fault for a crash. That often places injured riders in a strong position when pursuing a claim.

After a bus crash, some injuries take time to appear. Whiplash, concussions, and back injuries may not become obvious until later. Seeking medical care quickly can help protect both your health and your claim.

When a stolen vehicle causes a collision, insurance issues can become more complex. Compensation may come from transit coverage, uninsured motorist benefits, or other available policies. The facts of the crash will determine which coverage applies.

Along busy roads such as State Street, Michigan Avenue, and Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, passengers depend on others to drive safely. A sudden impact can throw riders into seats, rails, or windows. Even moderate crashes can cause significant injuries.

If your injuries keep you from working, you may recover lost wages. You may also seek compensation for reduced earning capacity if your condition affects future employment. These damages are separate from your medical expenses.

Because passengers do not control either vehicle, liability disputes are less common. Insurance companies often focus on the extent of injuries instead. Medical records and treatment history can help support the value of your claim.

A Chicago personal injury attorney can investigate the crash and identify all available coverage. Public transit accidents often involve additional legal and insurance issues. Early action can help preserve evidence and protect your rights.
