The Impact of Super Lawyers

At Ankin Law, many of our clients use the Super Lawyers list by Super Lawyers magazine as a resource to verify the quality of legal professionals in the community. The Super Lawyers vetting process ensures that the public is provided with easy-to-use access to top practitioners in every area of law. Super Lawyers also provides a platform for the next generation of attorneys who are becoming stars, the younger partners, even some of the senior associates, who deserve to be recognized for their success.

Selection Process

The objective of the selection team is to create a credible, comprehensive and diverse listing of outstanding attorneys that can be used as a resource for attorneys and consumers searching for legal counsel. Super Lawyers selects attorneys using a patented multiphase selection process.

To be named a Super Lawyer a lawyer must first be entered into the candidate pool. For this, lawyers are selected through a managing partner survey, nominated by peers, identified through third-party feedback, and/or identified by the Super Lawyers research team. Lawyers can not nominate themselves and they are prohibited from campaigning.

The next step of the process is independent research by the Super Lawyers team as they evaluate candidates using 12 indicators of professional achievement and peer recognition. These indicators are verdicts and settlements; transactions; representative clients; experience; honors/awards; special licenses/certifications; position within the law firm; bar and/or professional activity; pro bono and community service; scholarly lectures/writings; education/employment background; and other outstanding achievements. The indicators are not weighted equally as some have a higher point value than others.

The third step of this rigorous process is a peer evaluation whereby candidates with the highest point totals from steps one and two serve on a Blue Ribbon Panel to evaluate other candidates within their primary practice area.

The final selection of Super Lawyers constitutes a representative number of small, medium and large firm attorneys. No more than 5% of attorneys in a state are selected to be Super Lawyers. Remaining candidates who are 40 years old or younger, or have been in practice for 10 years or less are eligible to be named Rising Stars. Only 2.5% of those candidates are chosen to be Rising Stars.

A Brief History of Super Lawyers

Super Lawyers got its’ start in 1990 as an offbeat Minneapolis/St Paul city magazine titled Minnesota Law & Politics. It was a smart magazine for a smart audience. In August of 1991 the magazine published its’ first Super Lawyers list which quickly became the biggest selling issue for the magazine up to that point. As the Super Lawyers list grew and was refined over the subsequent years other city magazines from across the country joined in. In 2003, a Super Lawyers list appeared in Texas Monthly. Soon, city magazines in Ohio, Indiana, Georgia and Southern California were part of the Super Lawyers family. Today the list is seen in nearly 100 magazines across the country, with a total readership of more than 24 million. Super Lawyers digital magazine is also available online and can be easily shared on Facebook, Twitter, and LinkedIn.
