How Do You Get a Police Report After a Crash in Joliet, IL?

When a crash involves a fatality or serious injury on a highway like I-80, Illinois State Police are typically the reporting agency, not local police. That distinction matters when you go to request the report.

For crashes handled by ISP, you can submit a request through the Illinois State Police crash report portal online, or visit a district headquarters in person. There is generally a small fee, and you will need basic details about the collision (the date, location, and the names of those involved). Reports are typically available within several days of the crash, though complex cases may take longer.

A police report is one of the most useful documents that a car accident lawyer can use in any personal injury or wrongful death claim. It captures the officers who responded observations, any citations issued, witness information, and the preliminary assessment of how the collision occurred.

Wrong-way crashes on Illinois interstates tend to produce catastrophic outcomes, particularly when a passenger vehicle meets a fully loaded semi at highway speed. I-80 runs through Will County as one of the most heavily trafficked freight corridors in the country. Collisions along this stretch can involve multiple liable parties, including the wrong-way driver, a trucking company, or others depending on the circumstances.
