Who Pays for Medical Bills After a Car Accident in Illinois?
In Illinois, the at-fault driver is generally responsible for medical bills after a car accident. However, payment often starts through a person’s own health insurance or medical coverage while fault is being determined.
Illinois follows a fault-based system, which means liability plays a key role in who ultimately pays. Insurance companies review police reports, statements, and other evidence to decide responsibility. During this process, injured people may rely on health insurance, MedPay coverage, or out-of-pocket payments before seeking reimbursement through a claim.
Medical expenses after a crash can vary widely. People may need emergency care, imaging tests, physical therapy, or follow-up visits. Some injuries appear later, which can lead to additional treatment over time. Keeping records of bills, prescriptions, and appointments helps track costs and supports any future claim.
After a crash, a car accident lawyer can review insurance policies, organize documentation, and explain how compensation may apply to medical expenses. They can also help communicate with insurers and clarify what options may be available based on the details of the accident.
