Despite its popularity, the NuvaRing comes with its fair share of risks and side effects that a patient should consider carefully before deciding to use the NuvaRing birth control method. NuvaRing is a flexible polyethylene ring inserted into the vagina, containing a combination of estrogen and progestin that are absorbed and released directly into the bloodstream in a low steady dose. But because NuvaRing has been associated with an increased risk of blood clots, which can be deadly in some cases, NuvaRing may not be appropriate for all women.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has acknowledged the risk of blood clots associated with the NuvaRing birth control method and has warned patients of these risks. Yet despite the FDA’s warnings, NuvaRing remains on the market. In fact, NuvaRing is one of the world’s most popular forms of non-pill birth control, with recent data indicating that more than 5.5 million prescriptions were written in the U.S. in 2010.
Because of its association with serious, and even deadly, blood clots, NuvaRing’s manufacturer, Merck, has been named in more than 700 lawsuits throughout the country. Most of those lawsuits, which accuse Merck of downplaying the risks associated with NuvaRing, have been consolidated into a multidistrict litigation, with bellwether cases expected to go to trial in July 2013.
NuvaRing is not the only birth control method to come with risks of serious side effects, however. For instance, the Ortho Evra Patch has been associated with various health problems, including strokes, blood clots, heart attacks, myocardial infarction and gallbladder disease. Yasmin and Yaz have been known to cause blood clots, stroke, heart attack, gall bladder disease, and pancreatitis.
Given the risks and benefits associated with NuvaRing and other forms of birth control, women should seek the advice of a medical professional before making decisions about which birth control method is the most appropriate.
