Drowsy driving is a huge problem on American roads. Some safety experts suggest that measuring brain waves could prevent drowsy driving among truckers.

Drowsy driving is a huge safety concern, especially when trucks are involved, which is why some safety advocates are pushing for measures to prevent this practice. Some suggest that measuring brain waves can help to prevent drowsy truck drivers from hitting the roads.

Though their profession is regulated, truck drivers often work long hours, resulting in drowsy driving. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, drivers who are sleepy are twice as likely to make errors on the road.

Truckers are required to log their hours and restrictions have been placed on the amount of hours that they may drive. Since large trucks are involved in approximately 7 out of every 10 highway accidents, safety advocates are pushing strongly for legal changes that will prevent drowsy driving by truckers.

More car and truck manufacturers are beginning to develop technologies that help to keep drivers safe. Many major highways are now also equipped with rumble strips that are designed to wake drivers who drift from their lane. One new technology that some believe shows promise is the use of EEG to measure driver’s brain waves and determine if they are getting sleepy.

Some of the prototypes include small units that could be inserted into a baseball cap. New technologies are also being developed that may be able to track body signals, such as eye movements and pulse that indicate drowsiness.

The use of electronic hour and mileage logs are now widespread in the trucking industry, which is already reducing overwork. Safety advocates hope that these new technologies will eventually become as common as these logs.
