Illinois transportation officials sought to reduce the number of motor vehicle accidents in Illinois in 2012. Unfortunately, early estimates indicate that that goal was not obtained. Official statistics on Illinois motor vehicle accidents are not yet available for 2012, but the Chicago Tribune reported that Illinois traffic fatalities increase 17 percent from January 2012 through July 2012, compared with the same period in 2011. In the first seven months of 2012, there were 559 motor vehicle accidents, up from 478 fatalities during the same seven months in 2011.
John Webber, interim director of the Illinois Department of Transportation’s Division of Traffic Safety, told the State Journal-Register that the number of Illinois traffic fatalities increased from 918 in 2011 to 963 in 2012, which was likely due to the fact that more people drove more during the first few months of 2012 due to the relatively mild winter weather.
Traffic fatalities increased in 2012 in other states and nationwide, as well. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, there were 34,080 motor vehicle fatalities nationwide in 2012 – a 5.3% increase from the previous year.
