Many patients who have received one of the recalled Stryker hip implant systems – either the Rejuvenate or the ABG II Modular-Neck Hip Implant System – are wondering whether they can recover compensation costs for any corrective surgery that is required.
As we originally reported, Stryker Orthopedics recalled its Rejuvenate and ABG II Modular-Neck hip implant systems due to the risk of corrosion and fretting which can damage or injure surrounding tissues that may result in severe pain, inflammation, metal poisoning, tissue death, bone damage, pseudotumers, gait issues, and other serious problems. Patients may require a subsequent corrective surgery to remove and replace the recalled Stryker hip product.
The Stryker website offers little information regarding compensation costs, but patients may be able to recover compensation costs for a hip implant revision surgery by filing a claim with the company. Patients who have not yet experienced complications as a result of a Strkyer hip implant may, nonetheless, want to check with their surgeon about a possible revision surgery.
Revision surgery can be expensive and patients will need to cover the costs associated with the revision surgery until reimbursement payments, if any, are received from Stryker.
Although there is still some uncertainty regarding whether or not Stryker will cover compensation costs for revision surgeries, when DePuy Orthopaedics recalled its DePuy ASR hip implant in 2010, the company made efforts to “address medical costs directly associated with the recall.”
