Stopping Hoverboards in Their Path

Howerboard-300x169 Stopping Hoverboards in Their PathThey are neat. They are cool. They are dangerous. Hoverboards are 2016’s hottest toy and they are proving to be quite the headache for parents, children, and hospital emergency rooms.

Hoverboards have been responsible for numerous fires in the past year. At last report, 52 fires in 24 states have been attributed to faulty lithium ion batteries that can catch fire while charging. These fires have caused nearly $2 million in property damage, and destroyed two homes. As a result of the continuing problems the hoverboards pose, the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has indicated that they will seize or order a recall of the toys if they continue to fail to meet federal safety standards.

“Hoverboards are posing serious risks to health and property. In Miami alone, 10 patients were admitted to hospitals over Christmas with hoverboard related injuries. These included contusions, concussions, and broken bones. Many of these injuries were caused when the batteries died and the devices locked up while in use, thus throwing the user off,” lamented Chicago injury lawyer Howard Ankin.

Hoverboards pose many of the same risks as Go Karts, Segways, and other motorized toys. These powerful toys can cause serious injury when a user is thrown from them. Moreover, they pose considerable fire hazards that parents and children should be fully aware of. What makes hoverboards unique is that they have been rushed to the market by Chinese manufacturers before they could be adequately vetted for safety.

“If you bought a hoverboard, it is best to put it away and wait. It is likely the USPSC will issue a recall in the near future. For now, the only way to ensure it won’t cause a fire or send a user to the emergency room is to leave it in its box,” warned Chicago injury lawyer Howard Ankin.
